How to add an MCP server to VS Code (GitHub Copilot)
VS Code (with GitHub Copilot) can use remote HTTP/SSE servers and local stdio servers. The guided MCP: Add Server command writes the config for you; you can also edit the JSON yourself.
Steps summarize the official docs linked below, checked 2026-10-19. Client UIs change; if a menu name differs, the linked docs win.
1. Use the guided flow
Command Palette → MCP: Add Server. Choose HTTP for a server URL or Command (stdio) for a launch command, enter a unique server ID, then pick a destination (Global → Copilot Global for personal use, or a workspace file to share it).
2. Or write .vscode/mcp.json (VS Code format)
This format uses a top-level servers object and supports input variables, envFile and sandboxing.
{ "servers": { "agenttask-atlas": { "type": "http", "url": "https://agenttaskatlas.com/api/mcp" } } }3. Or the portable Copilot format
Workspace-root .mcp.json or ~/.copilot/mcp-config.json use a top-level mcpServers object instead. Don't copy entries between the two formats without checking the field names.
{ "mcpServers": { "agenttask-atlas": { "type": "http", "url": "https://agenttaskatlas.com/api/mcp" } } }4. Prompt for secrets instead of hardcoding them
In the VS Code format, ${input:id} asks for the value on first start and stores it securely.
{ "inputs": [ { "type": "promptString", "id": "api-key", "description": "API key", "password": true } ], "servers": { "example": { "type": "stdio", "command": "npx", "args": [ "-y", "@example/mcp-server" ], "env": { "API_KEY": "${input:api-key}" } } } }5. From the command line
code --add-mcp adds a server to your user profile in the VS Code format.
code --add-mcp '{"name":"agenttask-atlas","type":"http","url":"https://agenttaskatlas.com/api/mcp"}'6. Verify a real tool call
Adding the config is not proof it works. Ask the agent to use a tool from that server, expand the tool call in chat and check it came from the server you added. MCP: List Servers lets you start, stop and see output.
Good to know
- Servers that need ${input:...} variables are not forwarded to Copilot harness sessions; the portable format does not support input variables.
- Browse servers from the Extensions view with @mcp (MCP server gallery, preview).

From the AgentTask Atlas catalog: entries whose official README or docs include setup instructions for VS Code or GitHub Copilot.
- Filesystem · MCP steering group (reference) · no credentials
Pick it when the agent must read/write project files; scope it to the directories you pass on the command line. - Git · MCP steering group (reference) · no credentials
Pick it for local Git work (status, diff, commit, branch) without a hosted account; it can modify the repo. - Fetch · MCP steering group (reference) · no credentials
Pick it to pull a web page into context; the README warns it can reach local/internal IPs, so restrict it. - Memory (knowledge graph) · MCP steering group (reference) · no credentials
Pick it for persistent notes across sessions; it stores a local JSON knowledge graph, no cloud account. - Sequential Thinking · MCP steering group (reference) · no credentials
Pick it to make the agent plan step by step; no external access and no credentials. - Time · MCP steering group (reference) · no credentials
Pick it when tasks need correct current time or timezone conversion; no external access. - GitHub MCP Server · GitHub · needs credentials
Pick it for issues, PRs and Actions from the agent; limit toolsets or use read-only mode for review tasks. - Playwright MCP · Microsoft · no credentials
Pick it to let the agent drive a real browser for E2E checks; it can reach any site the browser can. - Context7 · Upstash · credentials optional
Pick it for up-to-date library docs in prompts; queries go to Context7's hosted service. - AWS MCP Servers · AWS Labs · needs credentials
Pick the specific AWS server you need; the docs server needs no credentials, others use your IAM profile. - Terraform MCP Server · HashiCorp · credentials optional
Pick it for Terraform Registry lookups; add TFE_TOKEN only if you need HCP Terraform workspaces. - Grafana MCP · Grafana Labs · needs credentials
Pick it to query dashboards, Prometheus and Loki from the agent; needs a Grafana service account token. - Chrome DevTools MCP · Chrome DevTools (Google) · no credentials
Pick it for performance traces, network and console debugging; it exposes browser content to the client. - MongoDB MCP Server · MongoDB · needs credentials
Pick it for MongoDB or Atlas queries; enable the documented read-only mode for exploration. - Neon MCP Server · Neon · needs credentials
Pick it to manage Neon branches and run SQL; it acts with your account's rights. - Notion MCP Server · Notion · needs credentials
Pick it to read/write Notion specs; it only sees pages shared with the integration. - Docker MCP Gateway · Docker · credentials optional
Pick it to run several MCP servers in containers; permissions depend on the servers you enable. - Microsoft MCP (Azure MCP Server) · Microsoft · needs credentials
Pick it for Azure resources from the agent; it acts with your signed-in identity and RBAC. - Firecrawl MCP Server · Firecrawl · needs credentials
Pick it for crawling and scraping at scale; URLs are sent to Firecrawl's hosted API with your key. - Elasticsearch MCP Server (deprecated) · Elastic · needs credentials
Avoid for new setups: the official README marks it deprecated; use it only on existing installs. - Netlify MCP Server · Netlify · needs credentials
Pick it to build and deploy Netlify sites from the agent; it authenticates with your Netlify account. - Heroku Platform MCP Server · Heroku · needs credentials
Pick it to manage Heroku apps from the agent; the README recommends `heroku mcp:start` so you don't expose an API key. - Atlassian Rovo MCP Server · Atlassian · needs credentials
Pick it when the agent must read or update Jira issues, Confluence pages or Bitbucket repos; the README recommends the v2 endpoint for new setups. - Next.js DevTools MCP · Vercel · no credentials
Pick it to let the agent read live errors, routes and logs from a running Next.js 16+ dev server; it needs `npm run dev` running. - Redis MCP Server · Redis · needs credentials
Pick it to let the agent inspect or cache data in Redis; connect it with a read-only ACL user unless writes are intended. - SonarQube MCP Server · SonarSource · needs credentials
Pick it if your project already runs on SonarQube Cloud or Server and you want the agent to read issues and quality gates during review; set SONARQUBE_READ_ONLY=true for review-only use. - Microsoft Learn MCP Server · Microsoft · no credentials
Pick it when the agent writes Azure, .NET or other Microsoft code and should look up current official docs and samples; it needs no credentials. - Buildkite MCP Server · Buildkite · needs credentials
Pick it to let the agent investigate failed Buildkite builds and logs; use the read-only endpoint unless you want it to retry jobs or start builds. - Datadog MCP Server · Datadog · needs credentials
Pick it to investigate production issues from the agent using your Datadog account; OAuth keeps access within your existing RBAC. - Figma MCP Server · Figma · needs credentials
