How to add an MCP server to Cursor

Cursor supports stdio, SSE and Streamable HTTP servers. You can install from the Cursor Marketplace, or configure any server yourself in an mcp.json file.

Steps summarize the official docs linked below, checked 2026-10-19. Client UIs change; if a menu name differs, the linked docs win.

  1. 1. Choose where the config lives

    Project: .cursor/mcp.json in the repository. Global: ~/.cursor/mcp.json in your home directory, for servers you want everywhere.

  2. 2. Add a remote server

    A remote (HTTP or SSE) server only needs its URL. Example with the AgentTask Atlas catalog server, which needs no auth:

    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "agenttask-atlas": {
          "url": "https://agenttaskatlas.com/api/mcp"
        }
      }
    }
  3. 3. Add a local stdio server

    Give the command, its arguments and any environment variables the server's README asks for.

    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "server-name": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": [
            "-y",
            "mcp-server"
          ],
          "env": {
            "API_KEY": "${env:API_KEY}"
          }
        }
      }
    }
  4. 4. Keep secrets out of the file

    Cursor resolves ${env:NAME}, ${userHome} and ${workspaceFolder} in command, args, env, url and headers, so tokens can come from your shell environment.

    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "remote-server": {
          "url": "https://api.example.com/mcp",
          "headers": {
            "Authorization": "Bearer ${env:MY_SERVICE_TOKEN}"
          }
        }
      }
    }
  5. 5. Use and debug

    Cursor lists the tools under Available Tools and asks for approval before running them by default. If a server fails, open the Output panel and pick MCP Logs. Toggle servers on and off from Customize in the sidebar.
