How to add an MCP server to Claude Code
Claude Code connects to MCP servers from its CLI. Remote servers use the HTTP transport (the recommended option for hosted servers); local servers run as a stdio process on your machine.
Steps summarize the official docs linked below, checked 2026-10-19. Client UIs change; if a menu name differs, the linked docs win.
1. Add a remote HTTP server
Pass the transport, a name and the server URL. Example with the free, read-only AgentTask Atlas catalog server:
claude mcp add --transport http agenttask-atlas https://agenttaskatlas.com/api/mcp2. Add a server that needs a token
If the server authenticates with a fixed token, pass it as a header. Servers that use OAuth instead are authenticated later from /mcp.
claude mcp add --transport http secure-api https://api.example.com/mcp \ --header "Authorization: Bearer your-token"3. Add a local stdio server
Everything after -- is the command that starts the server. Put environment variables with --env before the --.
claude mcp add --env API_KEY=your-key --transport stdio example -- npx -y @example/mcp-server4. Pick a scope
local (default) = only you, only this project, stored in ~/.claude.json. project = shared with the team through .mcp.json at the project root. user = only you, all projects.
claude mcp add --transport http agenttask-atlas --scope user https://agenttaskatlas.com/api/mcp5. Or commit a .mcp.json
For a team, add the entry to .mcp.json. A remote entry needs "type": "http": an entry with a url but no type is read as a stdio server and skipped.
{ "mcpServers": { "agenttask-atlas": { "type": "http", "url": "https://agenttaskatlas.com/api/mcp" } } }6. Check it connected
claude mcp list shows a status per server (✔ Connected, ! Needs authentication, ✘ Failed to connect). Inside a session, /mcp shows the same and runs OAuth sign-in.
claude mcp list claude mcp get agenttask-atlas
Good to know
- Claude Code asks for approval before using project-scoped servers from a .mcp.json it has not seen.
- claude mcp add-from-claude-desktop imports servers you already configured in Claude Desktop (macOS and WSL).
- Only connect servers you trust: servers that fetch external content can expose you to prompt injection.
